It is very important for women to understand that their natural hair needs care and nourishment while in any protective style. Many people think that you can just braid your hair up and leave it be while it is underneath weaves, wigs and faux styles. This is completely WRONG and can damage your hair more than you know. This post will explain how to take care of your real hair while it is in a protective style such as sew ins, wigs or other weave styles:
1. DRINK ALOT OF WATER/TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY
First things first, you must take care of your body from the inside. This starts with drinking lots and lots of water, eating vegetables and taking vitamins daily.
Think of your hair as a plant. You must water it and nurture it to see growth! You wont see shiny, healthy hair from eating junk food, drinking soda and not eating correctly. Water and veggies are the way to start!
2. MOISTURIZE YOUR SCALP
Spray your edges and braids with water every now and then. This aids in moisturizing the hair. Do NOT saturate the braids with water, just LIGHTLY spray water with a spray bottle. Do NOT spray the hair everyday. Too much moisture can cause overgrowth of bacteria and fungus.
Using light oils like Jamaican Black Castor oil, Coconut oil or Vitamin E oil are great for scalp health.
Recommended oils: Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil, Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Trader Joes Organic Coconut Oil.
Rub/massage the oil into my hair and scalp. This helps the hair to retain moisture from the water, while increasing circulation to the scalp. This also stimulates hair growth!
3. DO NOT KEEP PROTECTIVE STYLES IN FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME!
Only keep protective style in for 4-8 weeks, sometimes less depending on the style. The hair needs to breathe after a certain period of time of having protective styles. If kept in to long, your real hair will start to thin, and break, which would defeat the entire purpose of a protective style!
It is important to remove shed hair, detangle, deep condition and moisturize the real hair after long periods of protective styling!
